Project A.N. --- Part 1

1. Design assignment: A small hotel in the centre of Rotterdam

This assignment is to design a new small hotel with a unique theme and clear program for the chosen target group.

1.1. Site

The site is located in the centre of Rotterdam, and has several special characteristics. First, this site is situated in the area where the density of museum and gallery is the highest in Rotterdam. The famous Museum Park and the Witte de With Street are all located in this area. For the people who love to attend cultural events, this is a great place for them. Second, the public transportation is very convenient around this site. It is close to the tram stop ”Kortenaerstraat” of line 5 and 7 and subway station “Eendrachtsplein” (5 min. walk). It is also not far from the train station Rotterdam CS. From Rotterdam CS to the site it takes about 15 minutes walk. The third special characteristic of this site is the green of its surrounding. The site is sat between the beautiful green streetscape of Eendrachtsweg and the inner garden inside the building block. Eendrachtsweg is about 40m wide and its street profile consists of a canal in the middle, 2 lines of trees and grass on both sides of the canal. The inner garden is filled with trees and bushes which creates a totally different feeling of open space. Compared with the publicity and greatness of the streetscape of Eendrachtsweg, the inner garden is much more private and delicate.

1.2. Target group
The target group and program are still unknown. Designer has to figure out first which group of people is the target group of this hotel, and then develop appropriate concept and program for the chosen target group.

1.3. Room, Additional functions, and Access
A clear program with unique theme is required in this hotel design. It is very important for the designer to come up with the most creative and unique concepts for the chosen target group of the hotel, rather than ordinary concepts based on the precedents. For formulating the unique concepts of the hotel, many aspects like spatial composition, interpretation of private and public, relation between inside and outside, light, and material have to be considered. Room is the core of the design, and it must be given the special spatial quality to generate the special theme. Restaurant, café, or place for breakfast is not the obliged function in this design. To have this function in the hotel or not really depends on the target group and the concept. The additional function which helps to strengthen the theme and weave with the surrounding can also be brought into the program. Access of the hotel must be made with appropriate size and also needs to function well. Besides functional demands, it is also needed to be spatially attractive and corresponds to the unique theme of the hotel.

1.4. Service
This small hotel must not only be given unique spatial qualities for generating theme, but it must also function well as a small hotel in the city. Designer has to make sure that the hotel is equipped with enough space for the necessary service functions such as: storage, personnel room, kitchen, machine room, etc. The relation between the space for personnel and the space for the guests should also be clearly defined.

1.5. Garden & Ground floor

Normally no hotel room is placed on the ground floor. The spared space on the ground floor is usually used for public use such as reception, lobby, café, bar, etc. This hotel design doesn’t only focus on the interior space, but also on the exterior space in the garden. On the basis of this demand, designer needs to pay attention on how the interior space works with the garden and relationship between inside and outside. Extra volumes can be placed in the garden as the extension of the ground floor or as loose volumes in the garden. The function of the volumes can be integrated with the program of the hotel to form the entirety for the theme.
